INDIAN COAST GUARD SHIP DEPLOYED ON A ROUTINE PATROL SIGHTED A FISHING BOAT 5-6 NAUTICAL MILES OFF VIZHINJAM HARBOUR. THE BOAT WAS DIRECTED TO STOP FOR ROUTINE INVESTIGATION OF IDENTITY CARDS AND REGISTRATION DOCUMENTS. HOWEVER ON SIGHTING COAST GUARD SHIP, THE FISHING BOAT INCREASED SPEED AND STARTED FLEEING.
 
THE COAST GUARD INITIALLY TRIED TO STOP THE BOAT BY USING LOUD HAILER AND VHF CHANNEL-16. THEREAFTER SIGNAL FLARES WERE FIRED TO STOP THE BOAT HOWEVER THE BOAT DID NOT STOP AND CONTINUED TO TAKE EVASIVE ACTIONS. THIS INCREASED THE SUSPICION AND AS PER STANDARD PROCEDURES WARNING SHOTS WAS FIRED ACROSS THE BOWS OF THE FISHING BOAT. THE BOAT THEREAFTER STOPPED AND DURING INVESTIGATION IT WAS FOUND THAT TWO FISHERMEN HAD SUSTAINED MINOR INJURIES VIEW RICOCHET OF WARNING SHOTS. THE FISHERMEN WERE ADMINISTERED FIRST AID BY COAST GUARD AND HAVE BEEN SHIFTED TO MEDICAL COLLEGE TRIVANDRUM
 
INVESTIGATION REVEALED THAT THE BOAT WAS NOT IN POSSESSION OF ANY VALID REGISTRATION PAPERS AND IDENTITY CARDS FOR THE CREW. THE NAME OF THE BOAT HAS BEEN ESTABLISHED AS RISHIKA, REGN ALP-3321 AND HAD SAILED FROM TUTICORIN ON 11 JAN 15 AT 2030 HRS. THE MASTER OF THE BOAT NAMED RICHORD AGED 42 YRS WAS DISEMBARKED AT MUTTUM HARBOUR ON 12 JAN 15 AT 0930 HRS. THEREAFTER TWO MEN NAMED NISHAD AND SUBIN BELONGING TO THUCKALAI, KANYAKUMARI DISTRICT WERE EMBARKED FOR APPARENT PASSAGE TO KOLLAM.
 
THE BOAT WITH NINE PERSONNEL ONBOARD WAS DIRECTED TO ENTER VIZHINJAM HARBOUR AND THE TWO FISHERMEN WITH MINOR INJURIES WERE INITIALLY ATTENDED BY THE COAST GUARD MEDICAL OFFICER ON ARRIVAL. THEREAFTER THEY WERE SHIFTED TO MEDICAL COLLEGE, TRIVANDRUM FOR FURTHER TREATMENT AND THE CONDITION OF THE FISHERMEN IS REPORTED AS STABLE.
 
THE BOAT HAS BEEN HANDED OVER TO COASTAL POLICE VIZHINJAM AND FIR LODGED
