Dredging vessel reports recovery of a WWII unexploded projectile shell off Mumbai. Pics and matter.


On 11 April 13, Dredging Vessel HAM 318, engaged in dredging operations in Mumbai harbour reported an unexploded projectile shell stuck in its drag head. On receiving the report, JNPT sought assistance from Indian Navy for its removal. A team of explosives experts of the Indian Navy, led by Commander Mukul Rathi, was immediately dispatched to the ship for removal of the shell from its dredging arm. The shell was successfully removed and has been sent for further analysis and safe disposal.


The shell is 40 cm long with 10 cm diameter weighting 10 kg and believed to be of World War II era.
